Merry Christmas AND Mary J. Blige

Slim pickins for this week, but Blige's release is an exciting one. Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

Mary J. Blige- Growing Pains **Sam’s Pick**
This is Blige’s 8th studio album and a fantastic addition to her repertoire. She’s what I like to call on FIRE right now and this entire CD of new material is smooth as silk. The song “Work That” is on the new iTunes commercial. My fav so far is “Fade Away.”

Sweeny Todd- Movie Soundtrack
Who knew? Apparently Johnny Depp CAN sing. You can get all of the music from the movie in this deluxe complete edition, complete with lyrics, photos and an 80-page booklet. Worth checking out even if you aren’t a fan of the opera.

Tool- Vicarious (DVD)
Fans that have all ready purchased this are making a huge effort to point out this is NOT a live performance DVD, but rather the making of Vicarious. However, in Tool fashion.. there is a surprise. If you work out the code on the DVD, you can see some live footage from The Pearl show in Vegas. Worth the work for a true Tool fan.

Lupe Fiasco- The Cool
Again, I’m not the biggest fan of hip hop, but there are artists I respect very much and Lupe is one of them. His messages are different. More intelligent… deeper. He’s one of the reasons I dig the genre, though I am picky about the artists I support.

Also released:
Jaheim- The Makings of a Man

Thanks for reading.

save the earth, rock the beatbox and celebrate a ten year!

This week's releases are MUCH better than last week! Enjoy. :)

Live Earth- The Concerts for a Climate in Crisis (2007) DVD
More than 100 musical acts came together to perform at a series of worldwide shows to help raise awareness about global climate change and to advocate environmentally sustainable living. Rather than chronicle the entire list of music on this compilation, I’ll just give you the link to spun.com’s page.
http://www.spun.com/music/product-detail.jsp?id=2708527

Godsmack- Good Times, Bad Times- 10 Years of Godsmack
A greatest hits from the rock band that has sold over 8 million records to date and has had 13 hits, including 5 number one hits on the rock charts. This compilation includes a sweet DVD that has the band performing at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.

Nick Drake- Box Set
This box set includes 3 CDs: Five Leaves Left, Bryter Later and Pink Moon, plus a DVD that has a BBC documentary and a booklet.

Daft Punk- Alive 2007 **Sam’s Pick**
This was recorded at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris on June 14th of this year. This two-disc set is packaged as a bound book and contains an enhanced CD featuring five extra tracks from the show's encore and 50 pages of photographs shot on tour.

Wyclef Jean- Carnival II (Memoirs of an Immigrant) **Sam’s Pick**
It’s the 10-year anniversary of Wyclef’s first solo album (The Carnival Featuring the Refugee All-Stars). The former member of the Fugees teams up with artists like Nora Jones, Shakira, Paul Simon and Chamillionaire, just to name a few. Very cool jams, I must say.

Blake Lewis- Audio Daydream
You want beatbox? You got it. Not really my thing, but one hugely redeeming quality is that he works with Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic. Together, they create something fun and energetic, if it’s your thing. The non-redeeming quality of the album? The CD cover. Yikes.

The Libertines- The Best Of- A Time For Heroes
Not a super greatest hits… what you’ll find is the band’s 6 singles from their two albums, a couple tracks from their EP (I Get Along) and some others. Not too sparkling, but if you own nothing from the band, but dig ‘em, this might be for you.

Other CDs worth noting:
Queen: Rock Montreal & Live Aid [Blu-ray] (2007) **Sam’s Pick**
Rufus Wainwright- Rufus! Rufus! Rufus! Does Judy! Judy! Judy! Live at the London Palladium
Styles P- Supa Gangsta, Extraordinary Gentlemen
Ghostface- The Big Doe Rehab
Too Short- Get Off The Stage
Lucy Walsh- Lost In The Lights
The Wreckers- Way Back Home: Live From New York City (double disc)

slim pickings for the new stuff

There aren't a lot of releases today... in fact, hardly any. Regardless, here they are (check out last week's if you missed it... there were some fabulous releases!):

Releases for November 27, 2007

Keane- Live At The 02 (DVD) **Sam’s Pick**
I haven’t been able to find it on Amazon, but I’ve seen Keane several times live and I’m excited to get my hands on it. In honor of the DVD release, I’ll play some live Keane today for my AuNaturAlice song of the day.

Pitbull- The Boatlift
Pitbull’s second album features guest appearances by Lil Jon, Trina, Trick Daddy, Twista and more. I’m pretty picky when it comes to rap, so the jury is still out on whether this will be something I feel necessary to add to my regular listening. So far so good, though.

no turkeys here.. well.. maybe

CD Releases for November 19, 2007

OneRepublic- Dreaming Out Loud **Sam's Pick**
We’ve been waiting for this one! Alice currently plays the version of Apologize that Timbaland remixed (It’s on his latest: Shock Value). The original version can be found here along with a secret track that is low-and-behold the remix! This is a super pleasant listen and we are proud to be playing another act that has roots right here in Colorado!

Gorillaz- D Sides
Go for the limited edition box collection… two discs loaded with sweet remixes from favs like Dare and Feel Good Inc, plus you get some fun Gorillaz schwag like a patch, buttons and some art prints.

Sebastian Bach- Angel Down
80s metal lovers! You can’t beat Sebastian Bach collaborating with Axl Rose. Two of the biggest frontmen in metal unite on this solo album by Bach. Axl is featured on three tracks (including a cover of Back in the Saddle by Aerosmith) and if you are either a fan of Guns-n-Roses or Skid Row, you’ll probably want to pull out the Aquanet and tease up that long hair you can’t part with and tease it up.

Amy Winehouse- Frank
This is Amy’s debut album… so yes, it was released before, but not officially in the US. Critics hold this release much higher than Amy’s more recent album Back To Black, which was critically acclaimed on its own. This album is a bit more soulful, a bit jazzier and something you must have if you dig Amy.

MercyMe- All That Is Within Me
This is the latest release from Christian/Gospel phenoms MercyMe.

Nine Inch Nails- Y34RZ3ROR3MIX3D (CD+DVD) **Sam's Pick**
Year Zero remixed and this is one of the coolest remix albums I’ve ever seen! Not only did Trent Reznor bring some heavyweights in to do their own musical interpretations of his Year Zero tunes (Stephen Morris of Joy Division and New Order fame, Sam Fogarino from Interpol etc.. ), the DVD Rom has every track from Year Zero in multi-track format that you can use on Mac or PC to remix the songs yourself! I believe you can upload your remixes to remix.nin.com SUPER COOL!

Other CDs worth noting:
Keith Urban- Greatest Hits
Halo 3 SoundtrackFoxy Brown- Brooklyn Don’s Diva

finally, a cardio workout I can love....

You may have heard me talk about it on the air, but I wanted to touch on it in the blog as well. I recently started taking classes at LA Boxing in Westminster.

One thing you should know about me: I do NOT normally dig excercise. My whole life I've tried to stick with some form of it, but nothing seems to really excite me.

Around a year ago, I discovered yoga was something I could enjoy and for the first time, I was actually regularly doing something to make me feel better physically. I LOVE yoga, but it made me want more. You know.. a bit of cardio to get the heart pumping a bit more. Something to change it up a bit once in a while.

I've never been much of a gym person, but when I heard about LA Boxing, I thought it sounded like something different and I was right!!! The first class I took literally KICKED MY BUTT. I went home a bit shaky and exhausted, but I felt amazing. Like I'd really done something. So, back I've gone... the instructors at LA Boxing in Westminster are fantastic. Luke and Cody are helpful, professional and knowledgeable. I'm still such a beginner, but it's almost like having a private lesson because the guys go around and watch and instruct the whole time the class is going on, paying individual attention to each student. If you work hard, you can actually burn 1,000 calories in one hour!! Those are words I love to hear.

So, basically... I've found something new to kick myself into shape and it's the perfect balance to my yoga workouts. I want to thank everyone at LA Boxing (Jil and her girl included) for helping me find a place I feel comfortable.

I know they have some pretty smokin' specials on right now, including a free trial class to check it out. You can call LA Boxing in Westminster at 303-439-UBOX to find out more. Tell them I sent you and maybe I'll see you there.

fresh, hot and flat out dope

Here are some of the new releases for today, November 13, 2007

CD Releases

LCD Soundsystem- 45:33
This is not necessarily new, but it is the first time that’s it’s been available on CD. The creation was originally released as one continuous piece… Nike commissioned James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem to create it for their Original Run series. This release has the music in a easier form for the everyday fan to navigate because it’s split into separate tracks.

Seal- System
It’s been 4 years since a new Seal album was released and this one a lot more dance-oriented than some of his previous work.

The Killers- Sawdust
What you’re going to find on this album includes a b-side from “When You Were Young” (All The Pretty Faces), plus a couple tunes from movie soundtracks and some tunes that weren’t totally finished from the Killers first two albums (Hot Fuss and Sam’s Town).

Queensryche- Take Cover **Sam’s Pick**
Queensryche does covers. Everything from the Police to Sabbath and even some Pink Floyd. Super fun!!

Goo Goo Dolls- Greatest Hits
You’re going to find all the songs you’ve heard on the radio… so all their mainstream hits, yes, plus a couple new versions of songs, but all in all? Not that interesting of a greatest hits. If you own all the Goo’s albums all ready, you have no need for this

Duran Duran- Red Carpet Massacre **Sam's Pick**
And here we go.. another album by the legendary Duran Duran. In order to keep themselves cool (which they excel at!), the guys brought Timbaland and Justin Timberlake on board. This is a much better disc overall than Astronaut, which fell a tad flat in my opinion… it wasn’t horrible at all, but just not.. well, HOT. This album, however, kicks Astronaut’s tail!

Celine Dion- Taking Chances
This is a huge departure from the Celine you all ready know (thus the title of the album, I’m guessin’). She seems to be digging a little deeper and giving us just a bit more than the pretty stuff we’re used to! Even if you’ve never been a fan of Celine, try this one out just for giggles. You might actually like it.

The Hives- Black and White Album **Sam's Pick**
As far as Swedish bands go, these guys are one of the best! This is their third release here in the states and it flat out rocks. Crunchy and full of attitude, or ‘tude. Yeah… ‘tude would be much more appropriate. Hehe.

Boyz II Men- Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA
Oh.. hooray! The Boyz have paid homage to some of the most classic Motown tunes from legends like the Temptations and the Four Tops. Randy Jackson (yo, Dawg) from American Idol produced these fun gems. Also on the CD? A handful of their number 1s.

A few others of note:
Dane Cook- Rough Around The Edges: Live From Madison Square Garden
Alicia Keys- As I Am
Various- Now, That’s What I Call Music, Vol. 26
David Gray- Greatest Hits

Tuesday, November 6, 2007

woo.. new tunes!

Here are some of today's brand new releases: November 6, 2007

Garth Brooks- Ultimate Hits
This greatest hits package from one of country’s biggest selling artists includes 2 CDs and a DVD, with over two hours of music and another couple hours of video. Not his first greatest hits compilation, but definitely hearing it’s the best one.

Angels and Airwaves- I- Empire **Sam’s Pick**
I would call these guys a supergroup… but then again, I like to make up my own rules. Haha. In case you didn’t know, A and A consists of Tom DeLonge (formerly of Blink 182 and Box Car Racer), Atom Willard (formerly of Offspring), David Kennedy (formerly of Hazen Street and Box Car Racer) and Matt Wachter (formerly of 30 Seconds to Mars). Anyway, you get it. This release is awesome. Check it out.

Monster Magnet- 4-Way Diablo **Sam’s Pick**
MM is BACK! This album is rockin’ from start to finish and there is a super cool cover of a Stone’s tune to savor. MMs sound has not evolved too much so they sound exactly as they should and their obsession with space has not dissipated in any way. Delightful for the MM fan.

Rick Springfield- Christmas With You
Yes.. yes… it’s that time of year! New holiday CDs from some of your favs. Rick doesn’t do anything too out of the ordinary here. Just a nice collection of standards like “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “What Child is This?” and the like.

Jay Z- American Gangster
This CD is completely separate from the soundtrack to the film. But it does have a connection since portions of the movie have been interpreted in the lyrics of rapper legend-in-the-making Jay Z.

Other Releases of note:
Chris Brown- Exclusive
Cassidy- B.A.R.S.
Little Big Town- A Place To Land
Sigur Ros- Hvarf/Heim
Nonpoint- VengeanceJimmy Buffet- Live in Anguilla (double disc and dvd)

ghosts of the abyss...

I know I've been horrible about updating this with the exception of my release Tuesday blogs, but I'm going to once again try to make the time to keep it up. :)

First, I want to say a HUGE thanks to Tyleen, my Sam's Six in the City winner from last week. I joined Tyleen, her two kids, her brother and her best friend for a fantastic Saturday night! We had an amazing dinner at Sullivan Steakhouse (the sweet potatoes were to DIE for) and then we all met up at the Museum to check out the Titanic exhibit and then watched the IMAX movie, Ghosts of the Abyss.

I had such a great time. I have always been obsessed with the story of the Titanic, ever since I was a little bitty girl and this was the first time I was able to see artifacts up close. It was quite the experience for a Titanic buff like myself. I always find I get a lump in my throat when I reread the accounts of the people that didn't make it off that ship. But the story that gets to me the most? The fact that the band played until the Titanic sank. Thought there is a bit of a dispute over what the last song really was, one of the popular beliefs is they played "Nearer, My God, To Thee." It seems to make the most sense. During the movie, there was discussion about these everyday heroes that just end up being that way because of the way they reacted to the circumstance.

When tragedy strikes, what makes one person run toward it to help and the next to run away? What makes someone save themself during a crisis and someone else risk their own life to help a stranger? What makes a person who knows they are going to die, feel compelled to play music while chaos insues all around? I always like that story, though... regardless of what the last song was, those men kept playing. They knew they weren't going to make it. As musicians, their instruments meant their living to them, but in the end, their instruments were the last thing they could cling to as their lives neared the inevitable end. I get a lump in my throat every time I think about it.

So, yeah... excellent Six in the City. I forgot my camera, but Tyleen had hers and hopefully I'll be able to post a pic of the group in front of the Museum... send it Tyleen!!

The rest of my weekend was equally as great. Ever have one of those days when everything starts to feel normal again after a big shakeup? That's exactly how Sunday was for me. Hard to explain without getting too personal, but let's just say... I haven't felt this at peace in a long time about life in general. It's a good feeling.

Thanks for reading!

xoxoxo,
Sam

hot out of the oven... new music!

Here are some of this week's new releases:

Britney Spears- Blackout
The long-awaited(?) new album from Britney. It’s getting decent reviews in the production department, but I suppose it remains to be seen whether or not her fans have stuck around to appreciate it.

Blues Traveler- Cover Yourself
Ok, not a ‘new’ album, but interesting to say the least. The title says it all. They have covered themselves. This is sort of a greatest hits compilation, but every song is reworked. You’ll recognize them, but only after a few seconds of listening. A fun way to release a greatest hits.

Backstreet Boys- Unbreakable
They’re back… minus one member (Kevin Richardson) and if you liked the boys before, you’ll probably dig their 6th release. It’s unlikely they will rise to the crazy levels of popularity that they did in years past, but all-in-all, they did a pretty good job.

Saves The Day- Under The Boards
They started a bit more hardcore punk, but they have progressively moved into pop/punk land. May be ok for some. It’s tough to keep up with the lineup changes and makes it hard to really grow close to these guys for me, but I’ve been checking out the album and it’s very melodic and an easy listen.

Graham Colton Band- Here Right Now
Graham has traveled around with the likes of Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Maroon 5 and Guster… he is evolving nicely and this new album proves it. Very pleasant listen!

The Bee Movie Soundtrack-
This includes music from the movie, plus a track from Sheryl Crow.

Avenged Sevenfold- Self-Titled
This is the first album by the band to be self-produced. Harder than ever for the AS fan that wanted a bit more. Yup, angry. Bring it!

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

quality, not quantity this week...

Here are some of the releases for the week of October 16, 2007

Santana- Ultimate Santana **Sam’s Pick**
This is a greatest hits, but one of those you actually WANT to add to your collection because it encompasses Santana’s older solo work and some of his most notable collaborations. Plus, you get some new fun as well, like a previously unreleased version of “The Game Of Love” where he teams up with Tina Turner!! Also included… a song with Jennifer Lopez and Baby Bash that has not been released before. As well, you get the sweet new song “Into The Night” featuring Chad Kroeger of Nickelback. Hot!

Vast- April **Sam’s Pick**
I have loved VAST from the second I heard the very first album Video, Audio, Sensory Theatre…which was released nearly 10 years ago. Since then, VAST’s melancholy, dreary, sad yet highly emotional and beautifully crafted music has been something I require in my own collection. April is definitely an evolution for VAST, but a delightful return. It’s been 3 years since the release of the last one, Turquoise and Crimson. I was lucky enough to see VAST several months ago at the Fox in Boulder and it was truly one of the most emotional shows I’ve watched. That night, VAST busted out an incredible version of the Moody Blue’s “Nights In White Satin” that I would do nearly anything to obtain.

The Fray- Reason EP
This EP was originally released in 2003, but that was just a tad before the Fray took the entire world by storm! So, here it is again for those of you that didn’t grab it the first time around. These are tracks that cannot be found on the band’s mega-superstar album How To Save A Life.

Butthole Surfers-Piouhgd/Widowmaker
What we have here is not really a ‘new’ album from the Butthole Surfers, but a rerelease that combines the 1990s Piouhgd with 1989s Widowmaker EP. Stuff you’ve heard before if you are one of the few fans who has delved into past the band’s most known release, Electriclarryland, but now you have them together for one delightfully weird listen… classic.

Nate Schierman- Risk
This kid is from my hometown. A singer/songwriter with a gift for pretty lyrics and music. He’s released all of his music on indie labels and done a monumental amount of the work himself. If you want to check out a virtually unknown artist, try this out. It’s a nice listen.

When you talk for a living, nothing's worse than strep!

Ok... I never get sick. Well, RARELY I will feel a bit ucky for a few days... maybe a slight cold or something, but going to doctor for being sick? Not something I normally have to do.

Monday I was feeling a bit funky and in the middle of the night, I woke up with my throat nearly swollen shut. Kinda freaky! So first thing Tuesday morning, I hauled myself down to an urgent care center. SinceI haven't had strep throat since I was a kid, I wasn't completely sure that's what was wrong. But a quick throat swab and the doc peering in and going... Whoa!!! indicated the verdict: strep.

It was horrible! I've rarely felt the pain that I felt with that stupid ailment. Everytime I swallowed, it felt like I was swallowing a handful of thumbtacks.... couldn't speak, couldn't eat, barely could get down WATER for pete's sake. So, for any of you who have suffered the same, I will forever be theee most empathetic person on the planet. I normally don't have a problem being empathetic, but experiencing something pretty much new makes it a lot easier to relate. Hehe.

Today I finally feel pretty normal. I have a sore throat, but I'm so grateful to be back on the airwaves, playing tunes and giving away tickets to you! Evanescence tickets today (several chances)! Also, the last day to enter my latest Sam's Six in the City... a night out with me and four of your friends! This week's prize is tickets to see Brandi Carlile at the Gothic Theatre next Saturday... we'll meet Brandi, too! She's one of my favorite female artists... hands down and I know you'll love her, as well. Her show is sold out, but you could be there anyway if you win. Head back to my page on the website to enter.

As far as the Rockies go, I'm still trying to figure out where I'm going to watch the game tonight. Last night, I parked my butt at home in front of my own tv because I was still feeling a bit funky, but I'm in the mood to head out tonight and cheer on our team with a bunch of other rabid fans! This is so exciting for me. I've always loved watching baseball, but never lived in a city that had a pro team until I moved here. Fortunately, my father would make the 3-hour drive to Seattle often when I was a kid to take me and my little brother to see the Mariners play at the old Kingdome. Some of my favorite memories... but now I'm cheering my heart out for the Rockies.

Have a great weekend. Be safe and I'll meet you back here Monday morning after Bj, Howie and Jennifer for a brand new week.

Thanks for reading.

xo,
Sam

Releases... week of Oct. 8th!

Oops.. actually finished this on Monday night and then didn't end up coming in Tuesday... so, here ya go: Some of this week's releases.

Vanessa Carlton- Heroes and Thieves
This is Vanessa’s third studio album and in the couple of times I’ve spoken to her about it, it seems like she’s found a more peaceful place within herself and able to just focus on what music flows from her. Rather than worry about what others want to hear. This is a beautiful collection of songs and Vanesssa’s piano playing has always been pleasant for me. We have a couple live tracks back on the site that she has played for us in studio and also a version of “A Thousand Miles” that she performed as the headliner of AuNaturAlice II.

Debbie Harry- Necessary Evil
It has been a long while since “Blondie” has given us a solo album, but here we go. It’s Debbie’s sixth solo release and this woman can still rock like nobody’s biz.

Alter Bridge- Blackbird
This is the second full-length by Ex-Creed members and a vocal powerhouse from my hometown (Myles Kennedy). Strangely enough, I never compared Myles vocals with Scott Stapp’s until I heard him with the new group. There are similarities, but in my opinion, they are more apparent when Myles is singing something more along the lines of a ballad. This is a pretty rockin’ cd… or at least, has some pretty rockin’ moments.

Electric Six- I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me From Being The Master
You may not think right off-hand that me, Sam Hill.. would be in love with such a band… if not, then we need to chat a LOT more. Hey, who can resist juicy lil’ nuggets like Lenny Kravitz, I Don’t Like You and When I Get To The Green Building. I saw these guys at the Bluebird several months back and it was one I will NEVER forget. So much fun!

Kid Rock- Rock N Roll Jesus
Three years he’s made us wait, but we have a new collection of dirty rock tunes from the one and only Kid Rock.

Megadeth- Warchest (4 CDs/DVD)
Yup… Megadeth fans… Here. It. Is. The definitive Megadeth in the band’s first ever boxed set. You’ll find 33 previously unreleased tracks. All in all, over 6 hours of music and all the bells and whistles in the pics and a full live DVD. And Dave Mustaine STILL has that long, shaggy red mane. Gotta give him props for that.

Will Hoge- Draw the Curtains
Will has been through Denver on several occasions, spreading something that is just a teensy bit different than the norm, but just normal enough to be compared to the energy of early Springsteen (I’m sure he is flattered). He has a decent blend of blues, rock, soul and even a smattering of R&B and country. A good listen… perfect for a lil’ road trip.

Bruce Springsteen- Under Review (DVD) This documentary film covers Bruce’s time from 1978-1982… during which he released three albums. Some people claim this was some of the finest live Bruce from a storytelling standpoint.

shiny and new!

Here are some of the releases for today... September 25th, 2007

CD Releases

  • Blue October- Foiled for the Last Time ***Sam's Pick***
As promised, the double-disc is out! What you're going to get here is a full version of the album Foiled with some additional remixes and a new version of Calling You. The second disc holds 14 newly recorded live tracks.... those were recorded earlier this year at Stubb's in Austin, Texas. Included in the extras are exclusive video content and some brand new footage of the band, previously unreleased, of course! Listen to the show today and I will have a couple chances to win the new CD.

  • Rascal Flatts- Still Feels Good
This country crossover act has earned themselves a pile of awards and gained the respect of country music lovers (and some non-country lovers) everywhere. Their much anticipated new release is out today!

  • Foo Fighters- Echoes Silence Patience and Grace **Sam's Pick**
This album marks Foo Fighters 6th full album and touts the return of producer Gil Norton, who last spearheaded a FF album in '97 (The Colour and the Shape). True, the FF have 'toned' it down a bit as the years have passed by, but you hardcore fans will have little to complain about as this evolved FF sound is still familiar, yet a bit more complex than the last couple projects. A solid piece of work from one of my favorites.

  • Melissa Etheridge- The Awakening
Melissa has always held a special place in my heart... I saw her on the eve of my 21st birthday at the Opera House in Spokane, WA... shortly after the release of her album "Yes, I Am." I loved her guts, her lyrics, her powerful voice and her leather pants. Hehe. I saw Melissa here in our studio shortly after I began working for Alice. I was sitting in the studio, playing on the computer and I heard the studio door open. When I looked up, there was Melissa, standing there in the doorway. She was just poking around the building before a studio performance for us. Her hair was just starting to grow back after her treatment for breast cancer.

A truly amazing woman and this album shows that her experiences have truly enriched her life. I hear freedom of expression at its best with this release... Melissa's 9th studio album.

  • Brian Setzer Orchestra- Wolfgang's Big Night Out
Setzer has done it again... well, not exactly again... in the sense that he's done THIS before, but in the sense that he's impressed me once again. He's taken a grouping of classical tunes and reworked them with his swing magic! Since Setzer departed from the Stray Cats to do his own thing, he's consistently cranked out fun, listenable, danceable and truly feelin' good albums. He's worked his genius on still another.

  • Iron & Wine- The Sheperd's Dog
Iron & Wine has often been referred to as the new Simon & Garfunkel, but I think I&W's work stands nicely on its own. The folk meanderings of Sam Beam were first introduced to me with a tune I heard on the Garden State Soundtrack... a cover of Such Great Heights from Postal Service. At the time, I didn't know I&W was much more than that. If you dig folk, this is what I call modern folk at its best.

  • Some other releases worth noting:
Jim Brickman- Homecoming (Holiday album)
Queen Latifah- Trav'lin' Light
Will.I.Am- Songs About Girls
Nelly McKay- Obligatory Villagers
Chaka Kahn- Funk This
Herbie Hancock- The Joni Letters (With bonus tracks)

Thanks for reading!

xo,
Sam

hot from the oven...

It is a BIG day for new music... here are some of the releases for today, September 18th, 2007

CD Releases

  • James Blunt- All The Lost Souls ***Sam's Pick***
When I heard this CD several weeks ago, I was thrilled! James has once again proved he is a fantastic song-writer and a beautifully emotional singer. And he didn't make us wait too long for a follow-up to his 2005 smash album Back To Bedlam. I have to appreciate that! All in all? A great sophomore album. When James visited a few weeks ago, we recorded some acoustic versions of three of his new songs. You can listen to them by clicking: http://www.alice1059.com/pages/291004.php

  • KT Tunstall- Drastic Fantastic ***Sam's Pick***
From her attitude to her ability to create songs that make you want to just open up and sing along, KT is a gem. This is her second album and you've been hearing the first single "Hold On" on Alice for a while now. She is amazing!! KT's existing fans will find this more than satisfactory. WAY more.

  • Amy Winehouse- Maximum Amy Winehouse
This is NOT a music CD, it's a biographical CD. If you've ever wanted to hear Amy's story, this unauthorized biography may answer some of those burning questions.

  • Eddie Vedder- Music For The Motion Picture Into The Wild (Soundtrack)
The Pearl Jam front man dives into the world of the movie soundtrack here. So far, big PJ followers are being forgiving to Vedder, only lightly criticizing the short length of the tunes. Make no mistake, this is not a PJ album, only Vedder's journey into something fresh and different.

  • The Donnas- Bitchin'
Nothing like a bunch of chicks that really know how to rock. The title really tells all because that is precisely what this album is... bitchin'. Hmm.. kind of makes me want to revive the word. Ok, maybe not. Oh, the album art is fantastic too... gotta love a hot tush in leather pants.

  • Ben Lee- Ripe
One of indie singer/songwriter fans favs, Ben has crafted a lovely sixth album. So, Ripe meaning... sweet and juicy and ready for devouring, NOT Ripe as in needing some speed stick. He has a couple interesting musical guests on this as well: Mandy Moore and Benji Madden from Good Charlotte.

  • Ministry- The Last Sucker ***Sam's Pick***
Ok, I know.. you may wonder why I chose to include this release in my list today. Honestly, I always been a big fan of Ministry and a big admirer of Al Jourgensen. This album is the final installation in a Trilogy that we were made aware of in 2004 when Houses Of The Mole was released. The second piece, Rio Grande Blood followed last year. Jourgensen says this will be the final studio release from the band (I guess a solid dozen was enough?). The reason why I have always loved Ministry: The music rocks the face clean off, but it carries a message.... albet a bit rough in the delivery department, Jourgensen is intellegent. He thinks, he challenges authority and he was one of the first musicians I saw to climb up on stage and pretty much scream his political views. Before it was cool.

  • Resident Evil: Extinction (Soundtrack)
I have a secret... I LOVE zombie movies and I have been looking forward not only to this movie, but the soundtrack release as well. For these flicks, there is always an eclectic grouping of rock acts that collaborate to bring slamming compilation. Of all the soundtracks I own, I've probably listened to the Resident Evil: Apocalypse the most. Well, maybe tied with the Matrix soundtracks. Those were genius.

  • Across The Universe (Soundtrack)
Beatles fans.. they threw us a curveball on this one by releasing it on an off day (Sept. 14th), but here it is. Music from the movie... some VERY impressive performers like Bono, Joe Cocker and the Edge just to scratch the surface. If you get the deluxe release from iTunes you will get additional tracks that are missing from the CD version. Just so you know.

white after labor day? now why would i do a thing like that?

Antiquated fashion rules do not control me.

No, nobody criticised me for wearing a white sundress today, but one coworker thanked me for wearing white because she apparently gets teased when she does. Strange, if it's still 80 degrees and technically summer, I will wear whatever I please, white included... I told her to do the same. I mentioned the subject on the air and got a rather surprising influx of support which made me smile!

Even Goddess Duane (who sometimes pops in during the Alice Morning Show) called and said, "Girl... listen... if all women wear white on their wedding day (even though technically they are not supposed to.. wink wink) then you can wear it whenever you want. " Well, that makes some sense there.

However, HERE is the real reason I wore this dress today (speaking of antiquated beliefs... read on and you'll understand). I'm not embarrassed to talk about it, because I have commercials running on the Alice airwaves right now that talk about my recent surgical procedure. I've been very open about it. I just want people listening to know that if they are too shy to discuss things like weight loss or plastic surgery, I'll talk about it for them! :) Hey, the body is nothing to be ashamed of and Steve and I (Steve from Slacker and Steve) have had you along on our weight loss journeys.

A month ago, I got a reduction... as long as I can remember, my chest just did NOT fit my frame and I always said that someday I would find the opportunity change it. The problem is: I don't like having surgery (who does, right?)and I'm very particular about who I trust with those sorts of things. I always worried that going to a plastic surgeon would make me feel vain. But a few months ago I was doing a bit of casual research and found this Dr. in Denver that had this incredible reputation, so I thought I would consult with him and just see what happened. His name is Dr. Ben Lee.

During my consult I dropped my misconceptions about plastic surgery. I knew that this was something that was going to make me feel MUCH better, more comfortable in my own skin and ultimately change something in the only way it COULD be changed. This was something that would make me more myself and there was no other way to achieve it... I know... I tried with excercise and diet. They were always going to be too large for my body. Naturally, I asked my mother what she thought and she was very supportive. She said "Honey, you have been uncomfortable since you were a teenager... go for it."

So I scheduled my surgery with Dr. Lee and tomorrow it will be a month since I had it done.

All the pre-op appointments, the reduction surgery itself, and the post care have been so great. His staff is fantastic and I'm so glad I was willing to do the research and find a Dr. that I could really trust. Dr. Lee is awesome and all my girlfriends have asked if I'd go back to him. I tell them that I wouldn't trust anyone else.

I digress... so, today was the first day I didn't have to wear a sports brassiere and I wanted to wear something ultra girly so I could reclaim my femininity! The white sundress was the choice. Ha! I have had several phone calls about Dr. Lee since I've spoken about him on the air... so I thought I'd add his office number in case you're considering plastic surgery of any kind. I recommend taking all of those decisions very seriously and I tell you.... do your research! I did and that's why I believe I got the best experience and results possible.

there's new and then there's NEW.

Well... here we go.... some of the new releases for today, Sept. 11, 2007... a big day for the rappers, so if hip-hop is one of your loves, today is a pretty big one releasewise... read on:

CD Releases

  • 50 Cent- Curtis
You probably knew 50 Cent's new one was going to be impressive to hip-hop lovers everywhere, that includes the guest list: Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Akon etc... This is 50s third studio album.

  • Kanye West- Graduation
This is Kanye's third album. He's teamed up with artists Daft Punk and Coldplay to create a more-than-relevant addition to his all ready very impressive collection of work.

  • Hot Hot Heat- Happiness Ltd. ***Sam's Pick***
This is also a third release... if you saw these guys open for the original Killers show at Red Rocks in May (they also came back w/ Snow Patrol at Red Rocks earlier this summer), you all ready know their extremely unique sound. I love this band and have found every one of their releases delightful.. but if you're a long-time fan of the band, you will notice their sound keeps evolving with every release... In a good way!

  • Ani Difranco- Canon (Best of Compilation)
Ani personally chose all the tracks on this 2-disc compilation and it spans her work from 1990-2007. She's released nearly 20 albums and the 30+ songs she picked don't necessarily come across as a greatest hits, but a carefully chosen blend of tunes that span her entire musical career. Five freshly recorded jewels are also included... and as always, with Ani, you know you're getting exactly what she wants to give. She's in control and she doesn't mind showing it!

  • Jupiter Rising- Electropop
Hey, if you're looking for something fun, different and just plain grooooooovy.. check out Jupiter Rising's debut. Super fun.

There ya have it... a sampling of today's releases. I'm giving you early warning: Next week is going to be an amazing week for new music so don't miss my blog next Tuesday!

Thanks for reading.

i'm starting a new fashion trend....

Unmatched flip-flops!

Ok, it happened on accident and today I feel like a royal dork... but I've been laughing about it all day.

I have two pairs of flip flops that are the same brand and style, but different patterns. Anyway, both pairs are in my entryway and this morning as I was rushing out the door, I slipped my feet into a pair of flip flops and ran out.

Yup, you guessed it. My left foot is clad in a flip flop that's brown w/ blue polka dots and the right foot is in black with white piping.

So very hot. I think I'll start doing it more often.

Thanks for reading! Have a great weekend.

has anyone ever told you....

that you look like someone else? I get that a LOT. For some reason, I remind people of either a celebrity, a singer or someone that they just knew in high school or college. Some of the more interesting comparisons I've had have not necessarily been the most complimentary. Oh well, what do you do?

When I had long, dark brown hair- I got Brooke Shields, when my hair was blonde I got Laura Dern (EW)... I get told I'm like a thinner, younger Kirstie Alley. And then of course, there's the you-remind-me-of-my-college-roomates-best-friend.

One thing I always think during these encounters... "why can't I just look like.. ME!" Hehe.

Well, last night at Red Rocks, I was waiting for Louis the IX to begin and the woman sitting beside me with her boyfriend tapped me on the shoulder. I turned and she said "Hey, has anyone ever told you that you look like (I braced myself)... Sam Hill from Alice?"

It took me just a second to recover and say, "Uh, well... I AM Sam Hill from Alice."

Priceless.... so, thank you Jen. That was one of the most amusing things to happen to me lately.

In honor of Jen, today's AuNaturAlice Song of the Day was Mat Kearney's "Crashing Down."

fresh meat... er... music!

Yes, it's Tuesday and time to talk new music. It's not a terribly exciting day, but I have found a few fun new releases for you:

Check 'em out!

CD Releases

  • Ice Cube- In the Movies
Now, when it comes to hip hop/rap/r&b... I'm veeeery particular. Ice Cube has always been one that I've not only admired, but have made that effort to watch. He's political, he's angry, but most of all, he's smart and relevant.

  • The Perishers- Victorious
This is the Swedish band's 3rd full-length release. Though their name may not be familiar, you'd certainly recognize their tunes if you are a frequent viewer of the OC, One Tree Hill, Kyle XY, Grey's Anatomy etc. Some call 'em sappy, some just call 'em sensitive. I just say listen when you're not in a great mood, yet not in a really crappy mood either. Heh!

  • Kate Nash- Made of Bricks **Sam's Pick**
Ok... this woman is amazing and I truly believe, THEE next big thing. Her debut release unfortunately is only available as an import currently and it's a whopping 35 bucks. But, if you want something, you'll pay, right? Well, I will! If you want to wait, her label should be releasing the album sometime early next year in the US. I will remind you again. :)

  • Ted Nugent- Love Grenade
Ok... it's Ted Nugent and he hasn't lost one ioda of what makes him... well, Ted Nugent. From the early days to now (even though he made his fans wait 5 years for something new), he's just Ted and for those that get him and like him, here's a welcome addition to the catalog.

See? I warned you it was a little slim this week... but trust me, as we get deeper in September, we are going to have some incredible volume in releases that you will not want to miss!

Thanks for reading.

mat kearney

Today's AuNaturAlice Song:
Mat Kearney- Nothing Left To Lose
Recorded- October 2006 in the Alice Studio

I know I played a Mat song last week, but I was just in the mood for Mat! Also, we're gearing up for our second AuNaturAlice Show and it got me thinking about the first one and how awesome all of our acts were, including, of course, Mat. The news will be coming your way VERY soon. If you attended the first AuNaturAlice, you know how utterly amazing it was and I do NOT overuse the word amazing. Hehe.

Listen next week... all shall be revealed. I'm so excited and I know you're going to want to be a part of this. So cool!

why better than ezra today?

Today's AuNaturAlice tune:
Better Than Ezra- A Lifetime
Recorded- May 2005 at the Soiled Dove (when it was downtown)

I chose Better Than Ezra because they are from New Orleans and today is the 2nd anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. I could fill pages with my thoughts on the subject (including how grateful I still am for the reaction we had from YOU when we had our water drive), but I don't think I shall. I will just say we all need to pause and think on it in our own manner. It's effect was immense... still is.

oops.. forgot to tell you the aunaturalice song from today

Lifehouse- Blind
Recorded: August 12th, 2005 at The Gothic

This suggestion came from a listener who asked to remain anonymous. But interestingly enough, she was one of the Alice listeners who was actually at our pre-show soundcheck party. I remember that show so well and I always LOVE interviewing the boys of Lifehouse because they are so FUNNY.

Anyway, great suggestion for a song, though it is quite sad.

xo,
Sam

and just when you needed it... something new!

New Releases! Here are some of the new music released today.

CD Releases
  • Collective Soul- Afterwords
This is the second album Collective Soul has released on their own label. You can only get it two places: iTunes and Target. You can bet I'll be racing out to get my copy today!! The guys spent a big chunk of 2007 working away on the album and now it's ready. Remember, they will be playing the Fillmore on Oct. 7th (Live will be there, too!). Here's the link to our concert calendar if you'd like to get tickets. http://www.alice1059.com/pages/294879.php

  • needtobreathe- The Heat
This is the band's sophomore album and it's coproduced by Rick Beato and Ed Roland of Collective Soul. The band has kept is ultra positive-life perspective. A decent second album. I am still more a fan of hearing them live. Their fantastic energy just hasn't quite been captured otherwise.

  • Queensryche- Sign of the Times (The Best of Queensryche)
Ok, secret news here... I have been a fan of these guys for a long time and this is an awesome collection of favs from Geoff Tate (one of theeee best voices ever in rock, in my opinion) and company. PLUS, there are several previously unreleased demo tracks on the second disc and an acoustic remix of I Dream In Infrared. Woooo... put your rock sticks in the air.

  • The Last Goodnight- Poison Kiss **Sam's Pick**
I've had the sneak preview release of this album for a few months and I fell in love with it immediately. It's instantly familiar, pop delight! My favorite track currently is Stay Beautiful. If you want something fun and bouncy, this is just what you're desiring!! Plus, check back on our website (tomorrow) because we have a unique opportunity to have The Last Goodnight play live in YOUR living room! http://www.alice1059.com/

  • Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals- Lifeline
Harper tours tirelessly and has created such a repoire with his music mates, his eighth cd was recorded in just ONE WEEK. His albums have always oozed soul, but it's even more evident on this new work. Check it out!!

  • Paul Anka- Classic Songs, My Way
Remember the CD Anka released a couple of years ago? Rock Swings? This is more of the same. A VERY eclectic mix of rock tunes... all redone Vegas style, baby. The track listing is something I must include here because it's hilarious!!
1. Time After Time- Cyndi Lauper
2. Get Here- Oleta Adams
3. Mr. Brightside- The Killers
4. Waiting For A Girl Like You- Foreigner
5. Ordinary World- Duran Duran
6. Heaven- Bryan Adams
7. Bad Day- Daniel Powter
8. I Go To Extremes- Billy Joel
9. Both Sides Now- Joni Mitchell
10. You Are My Destiny- Anka's own song (feat. Michael Buble)
11. Walking In Memphis- Marc Cohn
12. Against The Wind- Bob Seger
13. My Way- Anka Duet

  • Balls of Fury (Soundtracks)
The official movie soundtrack (not the score) features some of your favorite hair bands... like Whitesnake, Slaughter and Poison.... come to think of it, Slacker would LOVE this. Hahaha!! A fun compilation, though if you're a fan of hair metal, you probably have most of it in your collection all ready. (wink wink)

In a separate release, the score of this movie has also been released today.

Enjoy and thanks for reading!

why it's a black and white day

Today's AuNaturAlice song:
Keane- Everybody's Changing

Great suggestion from Alice listener Shelby.... so thank you Shelby. I do love Keane.

Now, what do I mean by a black and white day? It is purely fashion-related. Ok, so it's more than that. A dear friend of mine that is longer actively in my life adored the simplicity of a black and white outfit. So much was this known to me, that every single time I wear just black and white, I think of him. He's not dead, nor did we have a falling out... he was a close friend that ended up not being permanant. Some close friendships end up this way... why? Who knows.

I have two friends that pop into my mind when I ponder the subject of friendship in a surprisingly temporary sense. One was a girl that I met through a very good guy buddy of mine. They dated for about 2 seconds, but her and I hit it off immediately and started hanging out. There was an instant comfort level between us. Not long after our friendship began, I got really ill and ended up in the hospital for a few weeks (long story... let's just say I'm short a kidney, but I've never been healthier!).

This girl just happened to be a nurse at that very hospital and she was there for me nearly every second. She was the most selfless person I had ever met and I was so grateful for her during that stressful time. She was like an angel who arrived right on time to guide me through a very ugly, scary time. I don't think us meeting was about us being bffs (as lame Paris would say)... I think somehow a bigger power knew I needed her.

Shortly after that, her life took her completely away from me. Her career, her relationships, her location. We weren't very good at keeping in touch for some reason. I don't know why we didn't try more. It's almost like we weren't meant to try. I don't know. I've seen her maybe twice in the past several years and each time, we are thrilled to see each other and we have a great time catching up and talking about our lives. But that's it. Strange.

My black and white friend and I had a very different friendship. There was no physical trauma. It was more of a simple person to person connection that you find with a kindred spirit (those are not around every corner, unfortunately).

Hard to explain this one, but it was more of a friendship that reminded me how to well... be myself! Helped me not take life quite so seriously all the time. How to just chill and learn that sometimes rollin' w/ it is ok! Easy enough, right? But sometimes we forget even the simplist things that bring us more joy in life and there are people (if we pay attention to them) that can re-teach us those very simple things.

I hope I meant as much to them as they did to me.

Every time I see the big 'ol ugly scar on my tummy, I think of the girl who braided my hair, painted my toenails, snuck me chocolate, got me moved to a corner room in the hospital and came to my home every day for a month making sure I was ok.... and every time I wear only black and white, I think of the friend that helped me remember some things about myself that I had forgotten in the big bustle that is LIFE. The friend that made me less afraid to just be me. Two so very different friendships, yet both so very special in my memories. Irreplaceable, really.

Well, enough pontificating for one day.

Sam

two 5s: click and live

Today's AuNaturAlice Song:
The Click Five- Jenny
Recorded three days ago (Tuesday, August 21) in our studio

If you are just becoming familiar with The Click Five boys or have been a fan for a while, keep listening for info on the next time you will have the chance to see them. It will be soon, promise.

Ok, that was 5 number one... get it? The Click Five? Ok, been a long week... getting punchy here.

Live @ 5 is the second 5!!

Every Friday, all summer long, Slacker and Steve have been broadcasting live from the Tavern Downtown for Live @ 5. Every week, they gave away trips to Vegas and today they will broadcast from Vegas with all their trip winners from this summer. Lucky them! But that doesn't mean The Tavern Downtown isn't still the place to hang tonight.

I'll be rolling into the Tavern about 5 o'clock this evening to get Happy Hour started and I'd love for you to join me. Plus, the new Fired Up For Kids 2008 Calendar has been unveiled and some of the featured firefighters will be on hand later in the evening to sign their pics for you! Yup, it'll be a hot time for sure. Bring your friends, grab an after work drink and get your calendar signed. It's a great cause. If you need more information, here's the Fired Up weblink:

http://www.firedupforkids.org/

The Tavern Downtown is downtown at 20th and Market. We'll be on the rooftop and hopefully the rain doesn't get us! :)

Hope to see you tonight for the final Live @ 5 of the summer.

Thanks for reading.

live mat and forgetful sam

Today's AuNaturAlice song:
Mat Kearney- Undeniable
Recorded- October 2006 in the Alice Studio

Alice listener Lori picked the song today and I'm always happy to play Mat anyway. I joke to my girlfriends about having a list of "pretend" boyfriends. I'm not one to normally faun over celebs (actors and such), but I do find my pretend boyfriends are quite often musicians. Guess it makes sense since music is pretty much my life.

Anyway, Mat has always been high on the list. Of course he's cute, but that's not really his big appeal to me. He's also intelligent, loves wine and enjoys foreign films. He always has a plethora of suggestions in that department. From the first time I was introduced to Mat, he was scribbling down movie titles on a cocktail napkin, insisting they would change my life.

The lyric in his tune I played today (Undeniable) that mentions February 5th always reminds me of the time I forgot my friends birthdays. I mean plural because I have 3 friends who were born on that day. Two of them are good friends of mine. The other is the best girlfriend I've ever had in my life and probably ever will have.

A few years back I was going through a stressful time and February 5th came and went and it never occurred to me that I had completely missed their birthdays. And I NEVER forget stuff like that. Especially not with the people that mean the most to me.

Anyhow, two days later, my best girlfriend called and asked if I was ok. I answered that yes, I was fine. I was stressed, but nothing I couldn't handle. She paused on the phone and said "Well, for the past 10 plus years, you have always been the first phone call I get on my birthday. I am worried that you aren't ok."

I remember looking up at my wall calendar and having one of those slow-motion movie moments of complete horror. I saw that it was February 7th. I was in tears as I told her I was the worst friend ever and could she ever forgive me? Of course she forgave me. She's my best friend. She understood... she got it... she wasn't in the least bit hurt or mad or bitter at me. She was worried about ME. Now, that is a true friend.

I called my other friends after I composed myself and faced the music. The guy friend didn't even notice I'd forgotten (of course... guys) and my other girl pal was so angry, she gave me the cold shoulder for quite a while. It said a lot about our friendship I suppose and it's not quite been the same since. It's odd when you discover which of the people in your life will accept your stupid mistakes (big or small) and still love and support you while others will hold onto things and judge you mercilessly for your mistakes (big or small). Maybe things like that help make me a more understanding, patient and non-judgmental person.

Incidently, when you are so stressed you cannot even remember your own best friend's birthday, it's time to take a vacation. I scheduled my first real vacation that very day. I went to Oahu and it was just what I needed.

Thanks for reading.

Sam

james blunt in the alice studio

I've mentioned before that we at Alice have a very special bond to James Blunt because we were the first station in the country to play his music.

I remember the first time I heard his debut CD Back To Bedlam. It was refreshing, intelligent, well-produced and simply delightful. James has since visited our studios a lot, doing various events with his fans and continuing to be his charming self.

Today we welcomed him back and he performed three beautiful acoustic tunes (new ones of course!!) in front of a tiny group of Alice A-List members. Plus, he again joined me in the studio for a quick interview and I have to be honest... it's been awhile since I've seen him in such a good place. I mean, James is always gracious and pleasant, but there was something different today. He must've finally gave himself some good time to rest while getting ready to promote the new album. Or maybe it's Denver that agrees with him. Who knows? But his soul was peaceful and the interview was more of a catching up than anything. His new album All The Lost Souls will be out September 18th here in the states. Get ready to be impressed.

I will be posting the full interview, plus the 3 acoustic tunes on my page as soon as possible. The AuNaturAlice page is where you want to look. Here's the link and if you don't see it right away, check back. We'll get it going for you. You positively must hear them for yourself. They are raw, full of emotion and if you all ready love Jame's music, these just might make ya a bit misty. No kidding.

http://alice1059.com/pages/802643.php

Thanks to our A-List members who joined us today and thanks to James for another fantastic performance. We love him!

1,2,3,4 get that booty on the floor... got something brand new for that..

Ok... didn't mean to go all Coolio on you for a second but I was having an early 90s flashback.

I naturally planned on posting this yesterday, but would you believe I had trouble logging on to my blog? Ok. Lie. I had The Click Five in the studio and things got a bit hectic. It threw my day completely off, so here we go! One day late... but here we go:

CD Releases

  • Ingram Hill-Cold In California **Sam's Pick**
These guys have a very special place in my heart because my first trip to Denver (to interview at Alice!!) included a show at the Soiled Dove when it was at 20th at Market. They played with Better Than Ezra. Absolutely charming guys! Cold in California is the followup to their major label debut June's Picture Show (2004). Check 'em out.

  • KMFDM-Tohuvabohu
Fans of KMFDM know they have definitely honed their sound and kept it so consistent! For a group that has been doing its thing for nearly 25 years, they have not lost one bit of the energy that their core followers so adore. Meaning, this can be described in no other way than another KMFDM album. You liked the last one and the one before and the one before... etc.... you'll like this, too.

  • Rilo Kiley- Under The Blacklight
Even though Jenny Lewis (lead singer) went on a solo mission a couple years back, Rilo Kiley wasn't gone and here to prove it? A new album! While Rilo has never been a big seller with their discs, they are respected amongst their peers and critically acclaimed so worth a listen or three? I definitely think so.

  • Josh Ritter- The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter (With Bonus EP) ***Sam's Pick***
You know when people say that an artist/musician is underrated? That does not even begin to describe Josh properly. He is incredible and this album is freakin' fanstastic. GET IT.

  • Ratt-Tell The World The Very Best of Ratt
Ahem... the best of Ratt. Remastered. Rock-n-roll baby... you know you want it.

  • Nikki Six- The Heroin Diaries (Soundtrack)
This is a precursor to the book coming out next month. This is so personal and so emotional any fan of Nikki will not be able to resist this.

  • Blades of Glory (Soundtrack)

  • Halloween (Soundtrack)
I'm particularly excited about this soundtrack because I'm a HUGE fan of horror movies and though I tend to be very critical of remakes, if you're gonna have a remake, who better than Rob Zombie to give an alternate interpretation? This soundtrack is loaded with 70s rock and snippets from the new flick.

Thanks for reading.. again, sorry a day late.

aunaturalice tune for tuesday

Augustana- Boston
Recorded- May 23rd, 2006 before they opened for Snow Patrol at the Paramount.

Thanks to Jenn for the email request!

xo,
Sam

new tunes... ooooh, shiny!

Here are some of this week's releases.. enjoy!

CD Releases

  • Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds- Live at Radio City Music Hall

Dave adds another stellar live recording to the all ready HUGE list! This was recorded in April of this year when Dave and Tim headed out for a very small theatre tour. Tickets to this event were not easy to obtain, so the live double-disc (CD and DVD) will hopefully heal some of the wounds. :)

  • Matt Nathanson- Some Mad Hope ***Sam's pick***

This is Matt's 6th release (not including his live release and a smattering of EPs) so you may be wondering "Why don't I know much about him?" Though Matt's music is inspired, romantic and completely honest, he's managed to keep himself just cool enough to NOT be mainstream. Haha. In all seriousness, Matt is incredibly talented and keeps delivering albums that are very touching and oh-so-easy to just pop in the cd player and enjoy.

His new single is called "Car Crash" and if you listen to Alice online, you may be hearing it. I often place brand new tunes on the webstream exclusively and ask you to give me feedback on whether or not you dig them. So, if you hear Matt's, don't forget to let me know what you think. Plus, I had Matt in our studio August 2nd and he was kind enough to play a couple acoustic tunes. I've placed them on the AuNaturAlice page and you can link to it right here:

  • 12 Stones- Anthem for the Underdog

This is 12 Stones 3rd studio release and though World So Cold is not the first single, it may be the one tune with the most recognition so far because it was used in a tribute video for the victims of the VA Tech shootings (youtube.com). The band, though surprised to hear their tune when it had not been released yet, were very touched at the manner in which it surfaced. I've looked up the link if you would like to see it:

  • Dean Martin- Forever Cool

Ok, this is something fun for you! A collection of Martin's tunes, with his original vocals alongside brand new arrangements from some rather incredible artists! If the CD isn't enough for you, there is a CD/DVD edition available as well with some fun extras. Here's the tracklisting along with the artists that are a part of this unique tribute.

1. Who's Got The Action (w/Big Bad Voodoo Daddy)

2. Ain't That A Kick In The Head (w/Kevin Spacey)

3. I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face (w/Chris Botti)

anaturalice song for monday

Blue October- Hate Me

It's true! Blue October will be back in concert October 20th at the Fillmore. In celebration of the concert announcement today, I (thanks for the request from Alice listener, Chantal) chose to play the live version of "Hate Me."

I am a HUGE fan of Blue October and I've seen them the last 3 times they've come to town. Justin (lead singer/songwriter) has an extraordinary ability to take his life experiences whether they be mistakes, triumphs or losses and make beautiful, compelling music. You can feel his joy and pain through every lyric. He has had some struggles, but has used his experiences to reach others who may be facing the same struggles. Quite frankly, Blue October's music just speaks volumes.

All week, I'm going to have chances to win tickets to our Blue October show on the 20th of Oct. They aren't on sale until Saturday at 10am, but you can secure your tickets all this week! Plus, I know we'll have some other cool events planned for closer to the show, so keep listening so you're in the know.

As always, thanks for reading!

aunaturalice song for friday!

Gavin DeGraw- I Don't Want To Be

Gavin has long been a favorite of mine. Not only because he's so amazingly soulful in his music, but because he's a great person in addition to being a great musician.

Today I chose to play him because I was thinking about his new album and realizing how much I'm looking forward to hearing it when it comes out. Hopefully, that will be before the end of the year, but hard to say knowing that he is still tweaking things in the studio. We'll see. :)

Every time I've had Gavin in the studio, he's always remembered exactly what was in our last conversation. He's incredible that way. He treats everyone with respect, listens to what they have to say and really hears it. A rarity in any individual, let alone someone who is pretty famous.

The strangest thing happened today after I played his tune as my AuNaturAlice choice. I received two emails practically back to back regarding the song. One emailer was horrified at the song, saying it was terrible (which I'll admit, shocked me. I often receive comments on my acoustic tunes, but never one that was so vehemently negative). The other listener is a fan and was thrilled to hear the tune and also related a very cute story about the time she met Gavin in Vegas at the RMAs in 2005. Funny thing. I was actually AT the RMAs too! I got a laugh from that.

I responded to both emails... I try to respond to most inquiries I receive, unless the emailer is just being rude, then why bother? Anyway, it was very interesting to receive two such opposite opinions about music and again I was reminded of how personally people take their music and their choices about what is quality and what is junk. I respect people's opinions completely when it comes to music, but it doesn't mean I won't argue with them occassionally. Haha.

I guess I look at it a bit differently. I can recognize when a song is a quality piece of MUSIC, but know that it's not my taste. In that case... it's good. Just not something I like. Then there is music I believe is just plain horrible, more from an arrangement/lack of talent sense.

Gavin's polished studio album is beautifully crafted and produced, yes. But those who have not heard the stripped versions of the songs or seen Gavin live are missing an essential part of him- the soul that pours out of him while he performs. It really is unique.

Good or bad, I love receiving your comments on music, especially the live tracks. They are all close to my heart, but yes, some closer than others. As I said to the non-Gavin fan, hey, if we all liked the same thing, the world would be a very boring place... but you will never convince me Gavin DeGraw is crappy lounge music. Sorry. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. :) But keep those emails coming.

Thanks for reading!

aunaturalice song of the day

Bowling For Soup- 1985
Recorded January 16th, 2007 in our studio

I love this live track from Bowling For Soup. I always call these boys the hardest working in music, because I swear, they NEVER stop! In the last year, they have passed through Denver on at least 4 occassions. All memorable. The first was in January when we recorded this track. Jaret and Erik took over my show for an hour and they set the bar pretty high for any band following in their guest-djing footsteps. They were hilarious!

Then in March, they played an acoustic show at Fado Irish Pub. It was a free show and hundreds showed up to watch them onstage (even Jay Cutler was there). They were onstage for hours, horsing around and playing random songs shouted out from the audience. Then... a couple months ago they busted out another stellar acoustic set at Dave & Buster's.

Tomorrow night (August 10th), they are playing the Gothic and I had a call requesting the live version of 1985. This one always makes me laugh because near the end, Jaret and Erik stop playing because Erik messes up a lyric and they go into a long explanation of what happened. Then they begin the song again instantly, without missing a beat.

Hope the track brightened your day.

chameleon girl

The many emails I've received on the subject of my hair have made me laugh so hard. I know, I know... the main picture on the Alice website features me as... yes, a blonde! I find it oddly touching that people feel the urge to type out their opinion of my hairdo, even when it's not terribly complimentary. Hey, we're interacting and I love it. Here is why you see a blonde me on the site and have not seen a blonde me in person (you asked!!):

I went blonde last year for a few months because I wanted a BIG change. I was blondish-red as a kid, but it's been quite a while, so I thought I'd try it out again. Quite honestly, I prefer red hair and have had everything from a nice subtle red to in-your-face candy apple red. I love it all!

So, it happens the last batch of headshots they took of our entire staff was scheduled during the blonde months. Literally, two days after those shots were taken, I went back to red. You should've seen my marketing director's face when I walked into work TWO DAYS after taking professional pics for the website, with completely different hair.

Needless to say, when the time came again to schedule headshots, the email that was sent to the staff had a line directed straight at me. It read:

"If you plan on changing your hair color (uh-hum Sam) or hair styles I would ask that you complete your transformation prior to the shoot."

This of course, was meant teasingly! Kind of the way things work around here.

Just so you know, we are getting new headshots today and my hair is red w/ black streaks. When you meet me, I should look pretty much like... well... me. My fleeting desires of being blonde were conquered by two things: missing the red and simply not looking that great as a blonde. Oh well.

Then again, I've been seeing all the photos of Victoria Beckham with her short, blonde do and it makes me think, "Hmmm... maybe I will try it again."

Great. Indecision reigns!

Anna Nalick- In The Rough
Recorded Oct. 25th, 2005 at the Bluebird Theatre

I remember Oct. 25th 2005 pretty clearly. It was one of the crazy days where I had a million places to be and we had a ton going on with the station. First, I took a group of Alice listeners to watch an acoustic jam with the guys from Switchfoot at the Ogden. Now, down the street, Anna Nalick was warming up to play the Bluebird and I had to bust up there to usher in a completely different group of listeners to listen to her soundcheck.

It was first time I'd eaten at the Irish Snug on Colfax. It was between the two venues so convenience was key, but now it's become a favorite haunt of mine on concert night. Hey, who doesn't love a lovingly poured Guiness?

Anyway, Anna and I were chatting after her soundcheck and it turns out she is a huge fan of Switchfoot and really wanted to meet them, so she was trying to coordinate it so that she could split for a few from the Bluebird and go meet the boys. It was cute to see her so excited to meet another band.

Naturally, I couldn't attend both shows, so I chose Anna since I had seen Switchfoot a couple of times all ready. Plus, her opening act was Blue Merle, who I loved!! When they broke up last year I was pretty bummed. If you're a sucker for the mandolin, you should check them out. You may detect a slight Dave Matthews-esque feel while listening to Blue Merle, but then again, you may not. "Burning in the Sun" is the title of their album that was released in early '05. Seriously, something to check out. Great musicianship and great lyrics.

ear candy... well, something new at least!

If you've been listening to me for a while on Alice, you all ready know that Tuesdays are one of my favorite days of the week because it's the day new music is released.

In the past, I used to regularly talk about some of the notable releases, but I've been REALLY bad about keeping it up lately. I'm going to put it back on the priority list. Every Tuesday, I'll bring you some new releases. Of course, it's impossible to give you every single one every week since there are literally hundreds, but I'll try and choose the best or at least, the most entertaining. Here we go!

  • Fuel- Angels and Devils
It's been awhile since we've heard from Fuel, but it's understandable since they spent a considerable amount of time searching for new lead vocalist. (As you may know, Chris Daughtry had the chance to front the group, but decided it wasn't the best thing for him... instead, he embarked solo and wowza has he been successful!) In April of this year, the band officially announced the addition of Toryn Green to the band. Toryn is originally from Alaska , but moved to LA to pursue his musical dreams and was previously in the band "Something to Burn."

You can't really compare Toryn's vocals to Brett Scallions (former lead singer), but he's got that gravelly rock sound that compliments the bands style nicely.

  • Flight of the Conchords- The Distant Future (EP)
This isn't the new full-length album from FOTC, just a tidbit of what you will be hearing on the complete release (due out in Oct). Should be enough to keep you entertained if the HBO show isn't doing a good enough job on its own.

I've been watching FOTC on HBO since the start and I find it refreshing, funny, amusing and just plain weird. Brett McKenzie and Jemaine Clement have been doing the folk-parody thing for 5 years, but this is the first time we've been heavily exposed to their unique tunes. At very least, check out Flight of the Conchords on HBO (new episodes Sunday nights). If you dig, you can satiate yourself with the new EP until the full CD is released.

  • Constantine- Constantine Maroulis
Former American Idol contestant Constantine releases a long-awaited solo album. Well, for his fans, at least! Different from Pray for the Soul of Betty because this is Constantine on his own, not as part of a band. Pray for the Soul of Betty was something he was involved with before the Idol days. His solo work gives us what his fans loved best and it translates really well.

  • Superbad- The Soundtrack
Super- FUNKY tunes are sprinkled into this comedys soundtrack. Examples? The Roots, Curtis Mayfield and Rick James.

  • Harry Potter Piano Tribute

Score selections from various Harry Potter movies. Piano versions of Buckbeak's Flight, Quiddich World Cup, Harry in the Winter etc..

Warning! These versions are just piano. ONLY piano. Nowhere similar to the full-orchestra presentations of the score on the actual soundtracks. This is merely a tribute.

Music DVDs out today

Bon Jovi- Rock Case Study

Guns-n-Roses- Rock Case Study

**Sam's pick for this week**

Thirteen Senses- Contact
Ok, so this was released in May in the UK only, but I was excited and wanted to clue you in. Being a HUGE fan of Brit Alt/Pop, I was turned onto this band with the release of their first album The Invitation in 2005. The follow-up is produced by Danton Supple of Coldplay fame as was the first release from the band.

Unfortunately, Contact is only available as an import at this time so to order it may be a bit steep, but I know you can download the album from iTunes. Save you some dough.

six in the city... fire alarms and circus folk

It's not often that I get two Six in the City outings in one weekend. Lucky me! In case you don't know what Six in the City is: it's a way for me, you and four of your friends to do something fun out on the town. We've done a LOT of cool events so far... like seeing the ballet, meeting rock stars, seeing comedians at Comedy Works, eating at fab restaurants around Denver and even a trip to the Vail Cascade Resort and Spa for a weekend of pampering.

On Friday evening, I battled my way from the Tech Center to the DAM... if you recall, that was the day we had that insane thunderstorm. It took me well over an hour to get downtown and I kept getting distracted by all the lightning. I'm like a little kid that way. I LOVE thunderstorms!!

When I finally made it to the Art Museum, I met up with three of my Six in the City winner's friends. Apparently Amy (the actual winner) and her 4th guest were having a hard time in traffic, too. Haha. When we were all present and the introductions were complete, we headed inside and grabbed a beverage while deciding what to do first, but our planning was interrupted by the fire alarm. Now, I don't know if you have ever had one of THOSE weeks, but last week was one of those for me and the fire alarm didn't phase me in the least. Just one more goofy random thing to add to the list. At least they let us take our drinks outside with us! When the false alarm was finally repealed and the firetrucks had left, we got our chance to wander around the museum and check out the exhibits and partake in some of the "Nighty Night" festivities. Amy and her friends were a blast! Once again, I hung out with some awesome and fun Alice listeners. It's always nice to meet people that listen to the station and appreciate the arts!

On Sunday, I was able to see my very first Cirque Du Soleil! I met Alice listener Denise and her 4 friends at the Pepsi Center grounds and we had a fantastic time at Corteo. Super cool show... I hope to see more of these because I was totally impressed.

So, a huge thank you to Amy and Denise (plus their friends) for the fun weekend! Keep tuned to Alice for the next Six in the City outing. If you want to view pictures from the festivities, check out my Scrapbook on my page at www.alice1059.com

something else to do if you're bored at work

Check out the new Alice Studio webcam! When I arrived this morning and saw our new webcam was installed, I was astounded at the quality of the picture. Certainly not because I haven't seen a quality web image before... but because now it affects my life 5 hours of every day!

I've had a lot of listeners over the past two years ask me how it feels to have a camera on me at all times while I'm working. I suppose I've never been that worried about it. I recall being pretty aware of the webcam my first two weeks or so here at Alice, but after a while I stopped thinking about it. Of course, then... the picture was delayed and had to refresh often, plus the image quality wasn't very high.

That has changed as of today. The new cam is in realtime and the image is of a MUCH higher quality. Yes, you can pretty much see everything I'm doing... rather clearly. I look at it this way: In about 2 weeks, I will be used to it.

It is a little odd knowing that I can be watched so clearly while I'm working! I suppose it will inspire me even more to make sure I don't look like a slob when i come to work. Ha! I don't tend to do that anyway, but just in case I ever get the urge, I'll know better! I only wish you could see out the window because we do have a beautiful view of downtown and The Rockies.

If you haven't checked out our fabulous new webcam, do it!

Welcome to Sam Hill's Blog!

Hi!

First of all, I love to talk music and I want to use this blog to generally discuss music and various Alice events. It may take a few tries to get my rythm down, but it will happen. I thank you in advance for reading and listening to Alice.

**The Sam Hill Blog Disclaimer**
I can't guarantee my grammer and punctuation will be without error. Occassionally, I get excited when I'm writing and my typing suffers (just a bit), but if you've ever seen any of Courtney Love's blogs, you know it could be a LOT worse.

So... Welcome to my blog! I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you and hope you'll do the same.
